Santosh Trophy 2022, West Bengal edged past Punjab in the opening match to start their campaign: Hero 75th National Football Championship for Santosh Trophy 2021-22 kicked off today at the Kottappadi Football Stadium with the match between West Bengal and Punjab. Bengal made the best possible start as they earned a narrow victory over Punjab in the Group A fixture. The 32 times champions, West Bengal started with intent in the opening few minutes. However, the resilient Punjab side came back a few minutes after. Both teams had a few chances but the best chance of the game came to Tarun of Punjab. The no. 9 was one v one against onrushing Priyant but the striker hit it wide. it was goalless at the half.

The second half experienced a similar pattern as West Bengal started the game on the front foot. A good combination play by Tuhin, Tanmoy, and Sajal helped Subham to finish with a volley from an inch-perfect cross by Bag. It was the only goal of the game. However, Punjab tried a few options from the bench. Punjab missed an absolute sitter yet again. A good cross down the right but the onrushing striker failed to connect his shot.
