AFC U20 Asian Cup qualifiers: India launched their campaign in the AFC U20 Asian Cup China 2025 qualification on a high note, defeating Mongolia 4-1 in a Group G match held at the Lao National Stadium KM16 in Vientiane, Laos, on September 25, 2024. The match began with both teams locked at 1-1 at halftime, but India’s second-half performance proved decisive, overwhelming Mongolia’s defense.
AFC U20 Asian Cup qualifiers: Match Day 1 – India vs Mongolia
The Blue Colts started aggressively, threatening the Mongolia goal with a barrage of attacks. Kelvin Singh Taorem opened the scoring in the 20th minute with a curling corner that eluded goalkeeper Khuslen Bayartulga, giving India the lead. Mongolia’s task became even more challenging when their captain, Sodbilguun Tumen-ulzil, was sent off in the 28th minute for a reckless challenge, leaving them with ten men.
Despite India’s dominance, Mongolia equalized against the run of play just before halftime when midfielder Temulen Uuganbat scored with a low shot, catching goalkeeper Sahil off guard. However, India quickly regained control in the second half. Manglenthang Kipgen emerged as a key player, scoring two goals within four minutes. His first, in the 51st minute, saw him skillfully find the bottom corner with a left-footed strike from just outside the box. Kipgen repeated the feat shortly after, again using his left foot to extend India’s lead.
As the match approached its conclusion, Korou Singh Thingujam added a fourth goal in the 87th minute, sealing a comprehensive victory for India. The team’s overall performance was commendable, showcasing their attacking prowess and resilience despite the first-half setback. With this win, India now looks forward to their upcoming matches against IR Iran and hosts Laos, aiming to secure a spot in the next round of the tournament.
