Mohun Bagan Super Giant Defeat FC Goa 2-0 to Secure Historic Win
Mohun Bagan Super Giant triumphed 2-0 over FC Goa at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in an exciting Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 encounter. The Mariners claimed their 17th victory of the season, with an own goal from Boris Singh and a late strike by Greg Stewart securing the win.
With this victory, Mohun Bagan remained unbeaten at home throughout the league phase and amassed 56 points, the most ever in a single ISL season.
The match began with Mohun Bagan quickly asserting their dominance, making several threatening moves into FC Goa’s defensive third. Both Greg Stewart and Dimitrios Petratos had early opportunities to give the hosts the lead within the first 10 minutes. However, FC Goa nearly capitalized on a quick counter-attack when Rowllin Borges released Borja Herrera with a precise long pass. Herrera found Iker Guarrotxena, who attempted to score but missed the target.
FC Goa slowly found their rhythm and created some meaningful chances. Guarrotxena’s clever movement kept the Mohun Bagan defense on alert, and he came close to scoring a few times. In the 31st minute, Borja attempted a long-range shot, but Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Dheeraj Singh Moirangthem was quick to punch the ball away. The same sequence occurred in the 37th minute, with Borja’s free-kick attempt being denied by Dheeraj, and the defense clearing the ball.
In the second half, FC Goa’s Asish Rai was booked for a reckless challenge on Udanta Singh, who had made a brilliant run down the left flank. Shortly after, Mohun Bagan took the lead in the 62nd minute due to a mistake by Boris Singh and Hrithik Tiwari. A miscommunication between the two allowed Boris’ header to bounce into the net, leaving Tiwari unable to recover in time.
After the goal, Mohun Bagan continued to dominate. Liston Colaco and Stewart came close to adding to the lead, and both teams made substitutions. Jason Cummings and Dejan Drazic were introduced by their respective coaches after a drinks break.
In the final moments of the game, with the lead secured, Mohun Bagan played controlled football. They doubled their advantage when Cummings set up Stewart, who calmly slotted the ball past Hrithik to seal the win. The Mariners celebrated their victory in front of 61,591 fans, securing the ISL League Shield.
