With the fans back at the stadium, the contest was handed an added flavor following the kick-off. The grants, shouts, and cries became common features but the scoreline had nothing to show as the first half was a goalless stalemate. A cagey first half promised much more as fans painted the whole stadium yellow.

Having failed to breach the spirited EB defense, Ivan Vukomanovic’s side upped the ante from the start of the second half. East Bengal managed to sustain the pressure of Kerala Blasters, making jaw-dropping saves after save. Eventually, in the 72nd minute, Khabra’s inch-perfect long diagonal was met by Luna’s stunning left-footer volley and it kissed the bar and rattled the net, which broke the shackles. Luna couldn’t stop crying after scoring as he dedicated the goal to her late daughter, showing her tattoo on his shoulder. Sometimes Emotions get better of professionalism and such was the case,

Having scored the goal, Luna said, “I am very happy to score the goal and for the win. Everyone knows what I am going through. Fans are back at the stadium and I am also very happy for them. ”

Day of Ivans

After coming on for Giannou, Ivan Kalyuzhni looked to control the midfield battle as he won a second ball and had a run at the heart of EB’s defense. The Ukrainian drove past Amarjit and stroke past Gonzalez and found the bottom right corner.

The two-goal lead seemed to be GAME-SET-MATCH but like what East Bengal is known for, they reduced the deficit with another stunning volley by Alex Lima. However, the two-goal lead was immediately restored when Ivan’s left-footer volley from 25 yards rattled the net following a Luna corner.

Delighted fans went gaga with the vuvuzelas, and Viking claps as Ivan Vukomanovic thanked the fans after the end of the match. So, the season had a perfect start as we move on to the next match that features Bengaluru FC  and NorthEast United FC.
