Khalid Jamil Urges India to Learn, Rectify Mistakes After Uruguay Defeat

KOLKATA: India Head Coach Khalid Jamil stressed the importance of learning from the experience as the Blue Tigers concluded their three-match FIFA International Window with a 1-6 defeat to two-time World Cup champions Uruguay at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan on Tuesday, October 6, 2026.

Despite the result, Khalid Jamil insisted that the focus must now be on identifying the areas that need improvement and preparing for the challenges ahead.

“We should not give any excuse. Many mistakes we have done, so we have to rectify our mistakes for next time,” said Jamil in the post-match conference.

India had shown moments of promise during the game, but Uruguay’s quality and ability to punish mistakes proved decisive. Jamil highlighted concentration as one of the key areas that the team needs to work on, particularly against top-level opposition.

“When you play with a good team and make one mistake, they punish you. So we have to be alert,” he said.

The Indian head coach also backed his players to take the experience positively, urging them not to dwell on the result as they return to their clubs with the Indian Super League set to begin on October 10.

“This is part of the game. Now go with the club and give your best. Nobody should think that because of you we have lost. It is collective,” he said.

Jamil also took responsibility for the shortcomings, making it clear that the defeat was a collective learning experience rather than an occasion to single out individuals.

Acknowledging that he too had a role to play, the head coach said, “We lacked concentration, not only players, even me. So, that is why, I have to give good instructions.” He added that the team must now identify the mistakes, address them quickly and use the experience to improve in future matches.

Jamil also acknowledged that the three-match run against Panama, Brazil and Uruguay has provided the team with valuable exposure against different levels of opposition. He emphasised the need for more camps and careful selection as India look ahead to their next international assignment against New Zealand in November.

“We need to do more camps. We have to choose the correct players and see,” said Jamil.
