Super Cup Returns, ISL 2022-23 format set to remain unchanged: It was 2019 when Indian Football Fraternity experienced Super Cup. FC Goa emerged victorious where Ferran Corominus, Brandon Fernandes scored for FCG. Meanwhile, AFC had already instructed AIFF about their minimum compliance criteria of playing at least 27 matches. There were so many discussions regarding the inclusion of teams in the next season of the Indian Super League. However, it is looking very unlikely to have any addition in the number of teams. Previously, ISL CEO Martin Bain had informed the clubs to meet the AFC’s criteria. However, the format of the Indian Super League will remain the same. Meanwhile, Football Sports Development Limited is working with AFC to secure the minimum compliance criteria for the clubs. Moreover, there were proposals of playing thrice in a league but the stakeholders did not agree to the prospect of the format.
Super Cup Format and Date:
That’s why FSDL is looking to re-introduce the Super Cup where top teams from I-League and ISL will battle it out for the trophy. As usual, it will be a cup competition. As there are plans for 16 teams, 4 groups will be formed with four teams in each group. However, the teams who will represent the country in the AFC Competitions will still have a problem (20+4 matches = 24 matches). That’s why there are talks of the inclusion of another cup tournament.
However, Fans will be looking for more clarity for the structure and schedule of the competition. Meanwhile, FC Goa was the last time winner when they became champions defeating Chennaiyin FC. The final scoreline was 2-1 in favor of the gaurs. Ferran Corominus, Brandon Fernandes scored for the gaurs while Raphael Augusto reduced the margin for CFC.
